Guten Tag! Hello! Welcome to German Stories. This is Episode 1. Ich bin Paul. I am Paul. I am your host, Christian. Let's start with our story. This is where we will also be learning how to greet someone and speak formally,

as well as the personal pronouns sie, ich and er.

Guten Tag! Ich bin Paul. Guten Tag! Woher kommen Sie? Ich komme aus Deutschland. Und Sie? Aus China. Und wie heißen Sie? Ich heiße Meili.

Hallo! Oh, wer ist das? Igor. Er kommt aus Russland. Wo wohnen Sie? Ich wohne in Frankfurt.

And now let's repeat our very first dialogue. Please speak after me. Guten Tag! Ich bin Paul. Hello! I am Paul.

Literally he's saying, good day. And the next thing Meili says is Guten Tag! Woher kommen Sie? Hello! Where do you come from?

Ich komme aus Deutschland. Und Sie? I come from Germany. And you? Aus China. From China.

Und wie heißen Sie? And what's your name? He's saying word for word, how are you called? Ich heiße Meili. My name is Meili.

Hallo! Hello is what he says to another guy in the distance. And Meili says, oh, wer ist das? Oh, who is that? This is a false friend.

There sounds like where, but it actually means who. And then Paul says, Igor, er kommt aus Russland. Wo wohnen Sie?

Igor, he comes from Russia. Where do you live? Here we have the second false friend because wo sounds like who, but it actually means where. And the final thing Meili says is Ich wohne in Frankfurt.

I live in Frankfurt. Got it? Then you're awesome! We highly recommend you to go back to the beginning and listen again to Paul meeting Meili for the first time.

Let's look at today's little piece of grammar. If you talk or write to a stranger, an older person, or maybe your boss, you usually address that person in a formal way. So you say sie, which means you formal.

If you are new in Germany, you would say sie to almost everybody, otherwise you might offend people. Let's look at these personal pronouns. Sie, with a capital S, means you formal.

We heard this in Woher kommen Sie? Where do you come from? Ich means I. We heard this in Ich heiße Meili. I am called Meili. Er is he.

And we heard this in Er kommt aus Russland. He comes from Russia. In today's part of the story, Paul gets to know Meili in front of the university.

Various dramatic events will soon unfold, though. Thank you so much for listening. Today's episode was written, directed and produced by me, Christian Leuchner, the main man behind German stories.

The role of Meili was played by Lin Fan. The role of Paul was played by me. German stories theme song by Esteban Del Pino. If you enjoyed today's episode, please consider sharing our show with someone else you think would like it.
