SRT to VTT converter
To convert SRT to VTT, paste your subtitles or choose a .srt file, then select Convert to VTT. The tool adds the WEBVTT header, replaces the comma before milliseconds with a dot and drops cue numbers. It runs in your browser, so your file never leaves your device.
Don't have the file yet? Get subtitles from a YouTube link, or get the transcript as text.

What changes between SRT and VTT
| SRT | WebVTT | |
|---|---|---|
| First line | Cue number | WEBVTT header |
| Timestamp | 00:00:01,000 (comma) |
00:00:01.000 (dot) |
| Cue numbers | Required | Optional cue identifiers |
| Styling | <i>, <b>, <u> and <font> in many players |
<i>, <b>, <u>, <c>, <v> and cue settings |
The timing values themselves do not change. <i>, <b> and <u> are kept because both formats support them. <font> tags and {\an8}-style position codes have no VTT equivalent and are removed. Characters that are markup in VTT, such as a bare & or <, are escaped so players show them as text.
Limits you should know
- Everything runs in your browser. Text you paste and files you choose are not uploaded to TubeTranscript or anywhere else.
- Files are limited to 5 MB and are read as UTF-8. A file saved in another encoding (for example Windows-1252) may show wrong accented characters; re-save it as UTF-8 first.
- Timing is copied as is. To shift subtitles that are out of sync, adjust them in your video editor.
- Font colours and positioning codes from SRT are dropped.
FAQ
Is the SRT to VTT converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on conversions, because the conversion runs in your browser.
Does converting change the subtitle timing?
No. Start and end times are kept to the millisecond; only the separator changes from a comma to a dot.
Can I use the VTT file with an HTML5 video?
Yes. Add it with a <track kind="subtitles"> element. The YouTube to VTT page has a copy-ready example.
How do I convert VTT back to SRT?
Use the VTT to SRT converter. It renumbers the cues and restores the comma separator.
Why do some characters look wrong after converting?
The file was probably not saved as UTF-8. Open it in a text editor, save it with UTF-8 encoding and convert it again.
