When I first walked in here as a young engineer, I remember thinking this is going to be a lot of fun. It felt like a mechanical engineer's playground. There were so many different types of equipment.

I absolutely love my job. I've been here the better part of 29 years because of the people. We're a community. We've employed generations of families and we're part of East River's DNA.

When this was built in the late 60s, energy was much less a consideration. But over time we realized energy efficiency means reliability, affordability and sustainability. It's how we stay competitive.

At Maybeck we take local northern species hardwood and convert it into exterior siding or cladding that ends up on homes all over the world. We use approximately $3 million worth of electricity per year.

If we save 1% of our energy bill, it's huge. That's why partnering with Efficiency Nova Scotia makes sense. We're so aligned in our goals. Over the past decade we've worked on many projects together.

Hydraulic systems for our press, agitation and air consumption, air leakage, VFDs. We started with a lighting project. Then we focused on humping technologies, compressed air. A big step for us was having an Efficiency Nova Scotia on-site energy manager.

David helps us with rebates and incentives, but more than that he helps us think long-term. We started creating a culture that is more energy conscious. We built a strategic energy management program.

Employees from every corner of the plant bring their efficiency ideas to the table. With David on-site we started measuring compressed air and we could see when it got off the rails.

He helped us find the waste and fix it. Sometimes a project starts because something is failing. That's what happened with our press hydraulic system. We put variable frequency drives on the low pressure pumps. That amounted to over $75,000 a year in savings.

Finding efficiencies is fun. It proves we can keep getting better. Now we're moving forward with other projects. In the finishing room we're bringing in variable speed drives and for the boiler upgrade it's about making better use of energy and reducing waste.

Over the past decade the difference in how we think about energy is real. It's what our customers are looking for. I am proud we've been here for over 50 years.

It matters to the folks who work here. When we invest in this community and in our people and in our product we guarantee that we will be here for another 50 years.
