and you are live okay welcome to House Education on February 28th 2025 uh this morning we are going to take a look at uh a mapping tool so this is something that you're all going to be spending a lot of time with during our break the mapping tool was put together by the agency of Digital Services with guidance from

Annie and uh we're gonna have it put up on the big screen here so everybody can see it but the link is available on our web page uh and kind of you all can open it up and we will um spend a little time walking through it and how it works and how it might be useful I think this is

um probably going to be a great tool if we start moving into uh line drawing uh so any can I ask you to perhaps um walk us through some of the functionality of it y you want me to walk you through from here or from the is this a document sorry to interrupt is this is public and we could share this with people that might all be

interested in looking at this it's up on our website direct people to the website how good is to find things and how easy it is to navigate okay can you see it on the yes all right so you know something why don't you uh so everybody can hear you

why don't you come join us if you can can you do it from yeah so the map on the screen or on your screens um is an interactive tool made by

GIS um Vermont has the director I mean Vermont has the center for geographic information and they have lots of data sets with lots of maps um and they were able to take whatever data was sent to them and put them into this interactive tool for you to all use and visualize um the school around the state

so this is the page that will open up when you first click on the link and then when you click on this dropdown arrow in the top right of the map you'll be able to see what type of layers you can turn on and off when the eyeball is open you're able to that means that you're able to see that layer and if you want to

see um if you don't want to see counties you can turn it off if I go back to the map here you'll see that the counties are off but you can still see lines and towns you're also able to see terrain so you can see where a mountain might be or where a valley might be um you're also able to turn on total

population so this includes population of all ages um you can filter on current existing school districts and you'll be able to see um let me turn off population you'll be able to see with this the current school

district lines and so right right now we're looking at a map of Vermont we got all the schools we got all the school district lines and what it's important to note is right now what you're seeing these dots are all currently existing and functioning schools but you can turn on only Public

Schools or you can turn on only Independent Schools the Vermont wow Independent Schools Association has notified um that the independent school data is not 100% accurate there are some um there are some data inconsistencies um but this is a visualization tool not a

report um so you might click on an independent school and see an enrollment number this is data that the center for geographic information already had on Independent Schools um but I believe there is um some discussion to fix that enrollment data wherever it might not be correct um so just keep that in mind if you're looking at independent

tools if you want to see if you want to get rid of school districts and see the supervisory unions you can also see those you'll see that their borders are outlined in the gray um one thing about when you're looking at the school district layer is you'll see oh what happened you will

see these lines in these dos that key is on the right here and you can scroll down overlapping districts is meant to indicate when one school district simply just exists in the same geographic area as another school district an example of this might be um when you have school district that is a a middle school district on top of the

high school district um those two districts cover the same towns and the same the same students and you might often see you might also see that those are districts in the same supervisory Union um if you want to turn off school districts and you want to look at um say you want to look at the

superintendence association regions remember these are the regions that are included in the proposal you can see those here all right that you what you just had up was the governors is there another Vision you'd like to see uh no that's fine I think maybe we'll walk through some scenarios um you'll also be able to

see um CTE regions are included School Board Association regions are included uh the regional planning commissions are included the regional planning commissions came from data that the center already had CTE and school boards regions were added in um that data didn't already exist so that was added in for this project so that's

how you can see different layers on the map I think is is it functioning for everybody no it's not functioning for me I think if you all close out the Wi-Fi would be less strained mine's working it's just I have to keep moving that out of my way mine is nowk also a little bit slow so let's see if we can um diagnose this a little bit you're having trouble

and you're on an iPad yeah I haven't Rob you're on an iPad working I seem I seem to be doing okay I mean I'm poking around here not quite as adep as any but um I'm trying issues you're on a laptop so um too many people all right so uh just off of that map

legend Schools Enrollment uh so I apologize F this if you want how do I get the layers oh got it the layers are in the top right drop down and then it's the V squares layered on top of each other if you all want to x out of your tab that would allow to done um ask a question yes are these

enrollment numbers current that is a great question so let's go through um that depends on the school or well so let's um if you think you've given us what we need to know I have not okay and and then we'll just start uh playing so um the good qu that was a very good question are the enrollment numers current so if you look at the

public schools say you click on a random Dot and this do up u32 you'll see what a nice do for you to so you'll see that this indicates that this is for enrollment year which is the most current that is available is that what why is that weird that is what is available on the enrollment dashboard on the AOE website

thank you okay and there are some inconsistencies in this data but that's a reminder that this is a visualization Tool uh this is not right and you can also see when you click on the school what grades they serve whether it's public or independent you can see the percentage change this was taken from 2020 I mean 2013 through

data um that is also available on the same enrollment D AOE website so what the sign peripher geographic information did was they did the percentage change some of the schools will see a negative percentage change and some of them might have a positive change for whatever reason when you click on the school you can also see the district and the supervisory Union the school buildings

will also show whether or not it's been tested and the PCB result and when I say tested I mean tested for pcbs yeah I will note however that the PCB category listed might not be correct as that was not information sent to the center but information they sorted through through a program so that's something that will be worked on during town meeting week

week to correct um you'll also be able to see when the build with when the main building was built uh was built and that's information that's included in the facilities assessment as well as the five-year FCI that is also information available in the fac who who can say what FCI is faity condition which those the for the UN

initiated what is that IND what does that indicate so what's the FCI for u32 it would be um five sorry what does the I stand for a facilities condition index index and what would you like it to be that's what I need to know is what's good that's a great question the number so let's look

at the left side and look at the 5year facility condition index filter so um when they reported fcis in the facilities assessment they also reported what might be good positive for or something to look out for um and you can read their reports to get more details on this um but you're able to see this

filters out by group of buildings that have fcis of less than and 10% between 10 and 30% um 30 to 65% and then buildings that have an FCI of 65% or higher might be buildings that have a lower building quality for when they were

tested all right so that says FCI five 5% so that mean they're pretty good shape I believe that's what number the better I believe then the higher the number as of when they were tested reminder that the um assessments were done in 202 so there could be rats now so when you click on the school you see only the school data

Frequently asked questions

The mapping tool was put together by the Agency of Digital Services with guidance from Annie, using data housed by the center for geographic information.

Users can view current enrollment year data, grades served, whether the school is public or independent, percentage change, district, supervisory union, and facility details like PCB test results and main building construction dates.

The map includes layers for counties, towns, state borders, supervisory unions, school board association regions, career and technical education regions, and regional planning commissions.
