Shalom, and welcome to Via Havta Yisra'el, a Hebrew phrase which means you shall love Israel. We hope you'll stay with us for the next 30 minutes as our teacher, Dr. Baruch, shares his expository teaching from the Bible. Dr. Baruch is the senior lecturer at the Zira Avraham Institute based in Israel.
Although all courses are taught in Hebrew at the Institute, Dr. Baruch is pleased to share this weekly address in English. To find out more about our work in Israel, please visit us on the web at loveisrael.org. That's one word, loveisrael.org.
Now here's Baruch with today's lesson. Are you someone who rightly understands the Word of God? That you pay attention to the biblical clues in the text so that we arrive at a proper conclusion.
Even that is an agreement with the scriptural revelation. And that means that you have to come to an understanding of the biblical culture that the Word of God reveals and not skip over the things that have great significance that all too often people ignore or simply do not recognize with their proper significance.
Well, with that said, take out your Bible as hopefully you know we are in the midst of a study of the book of Ruth. And Ruth is a fantastic story. It's only four chapters but what a powerful revelation from God concerning redemption.
We saw how in disobedience a family left the land of Israel and we see that God's judgment has disciplined upon them. But now Naomi, the matriarch, she has come back to the land of Judah and with her is this young Moabite woman, her daughter-in-law.
And death has encountered this family. Death because of God's judgment on those who were disobedient, those who rebelled against his truth. But Ruth, this Moabite young lady, she has learned some spiritual truth from this family and she has come to faith in the God of Israel.
With that powerful statement that we encountered last week when she told her mother-in-law, don't ruin me spiritually, emotionally by telling me to go back to my mother's house because she says your people are my people and your God is my God.
Ruth had come to the conclusion that the God of Israel is the one true God and here's the important thing, her life reflected her faith. Does yours? Do you make decisions that people can see you made that decision because of your belief in the word of God, your desire to submit to him, your desire to
put biblical truth into action knowing that only when we obey the word of God are we going to find God's provision, his blessings. Only then are we going to experience that love that he always had for us but we weren't able to experience and hold on to.
Well at the end of chapter one we find something. That is so informative for there we learn that Naomi and Ruth they come to Bethlehem at a very specific time look with me if you would to that very last statement in chapter one we read here that they came to Bethlehem that is
Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest now what does that say to you because I look at that and I see great significance why is that because that is a specific day in Hebrew the beginning of the barley harvest is called
Resheet and we can read about it in the book of Leviticus, Sefervaikra the book of Leviticus and chapter 23 but you know something else about it we can also read about this same day that begins the barley harvest from the Apostle Paul in 1st Corinthians chapter 15 and I hope you know that that chapter is so
significant because chapter 15 speaks of Messiah's resurrection the day that begins the barley harvest is resurrection Sunday that is to say it was on that day that Messiah rose from the dead and that day is so significant because it's a day of a life with the resurrection of Messiah death was conquered sin was
destroyed and victory became a reality and through faith in Messiah sure that is Jesus Christ through faith in him we can take hold of that victory and see God working not just in our kingdom future but working in our life today the moment we believe and we begin to exercise faith we can experience God's moving in
our life and that's exactly what's going to happen in chapter 2 so they come in to this town Bethlehem of Judea a town of hope a town of messianic expectation they come there at the beginning of the barley festival which we know is the same very day that Messiah rose from the dead it begins a seven-week period and seven
has to do with with with sanctification it has to do with the purposes of God and this family is going to embrace the purposes of God what a wise thing to do and I hope that you also are embracing the purposes of God well let's continue on look now if you would to chapter 2 the book of Ruth and chapter
2 we read here and to Naomi there was a relative now this is the word it's unique it's not the normal word for relative it's one that she knows someone who is known to her and this word known has significance because she knows what type of individual he is now even though he's mentioned here second they come
into the city notice that Naomi will not understand his connection why he's there what he's going to do until much later on what is the message for us very simple God is already at work he is already beginning to to move things direct things among this family in order that they can experience blessing they don't
know that they don't see it but you know what began it when she says I'm going to cling to my mother-in-law remember that we talked about that word for cling holding on to is usually a word of of obedience to the Torah taking hold of the word of God and applying it to your life that's what Ruth does you say well where is that in the text we're coming to it look again at at verse 1
chapter 2 and to Naomi there was a relative of her husband and notice what it says about this relative this man ish give or how you what does that mean a mighty man of value that is someone who is submissive to God someone who lives according to faith someone who applies biblical truth to their life and that
word ish give or a man a mighty man well give or can be hero and what does that mean a deliverer and we find this expression ish give or how you're referring to delivering or this concept of redemption because redemption and deliverance there's a close relationship between them we read that he is from the family of
Ellen melech and his name is Boas now this is important Boas why well that term comes from two Hebrew words a preposition which means in or with and then the word owes which is power so this man operates with power or in power where does he get that power from very simply from the word of God by applying
scriptural truth to his life he gets access to the very power God in his life to do great things and what are those great things God's will one was the last time that you prayed and said oh God supply me this give me that do this so that I can be obedient to your desires that I might participate in your
will that's what faith is about that's victory not you achieving what you want to achieve see the problem today is this there's too much false teaching that says God's there in order to accomplish your dreams for you he is not he's there in order that you might submit obey and do his purposes that's when the anointing
comes when you say yes to God and that's what Boas has done and that's what Ruth is doing and we're gonna see that when this woman even though she's a Moabite when she says no I'm going to be a follower of the God of Israel and I'm going to be part of God's covenant people when she says that it doesn't matter what her heritage her nationality her ethnicity is God doesn't care
about those things he brings us by faith into his covenant people he did it for Ruth and he'll do it for you notice what it says verse verse 2 and Ruth the Moabite is she says to Naomi I will go now into the field and notice what she says I will glean that is a type of harvesting it's a gathering she says I
will glean from the the grains after the one that I find grace in his eyes so what is she doing she is utilizing scriptural truth why is that there is a biblical command in the Torah that one is supposed to leave the the payout that is the the fringes of ones field the borders now some will say corners but you need
to think of it as a frame we all know a picture a picture usually a painting or such such has a frame that goes around it and that is what pale refers to here it is speaking about the borders of ones field leave them now how much you determine that you can be as generous as giving as you want so the border can be
very narrow or it can be very wide there's no measure do you want to be a blessing leave more if you want to be restrictive don't leave as much so this is a mitzvah le low char meaning a mitzvah without a commandment without measurement she knows this that you're supposed to leave this for the poor for the needy and also something else anything that falls as you harvest you
