Hello hello dear listener and welcome into IEL speaking part three we are discussing interviews >> being interviewed about interviews >> yeah a new topic >> it's very meta >> meta topic what do you meta >> how best to describe it it's like it goes beyond the usual things into the abstract so if you're interviewing an interviewer about interviews that would be meta Or if you have a television show

about TV shows, that's meta. >> Like, it's a joke about jokes. It's a meta joke. >> It's like above everything. It's very abstract. Gosh, this is a very avantgard way to start an episode. Anyway, let's get on with the questions.

>> Your homework was to watch an interview with Zindez and Dia. We don't know how to pronounce your name. So, have you have you done it? No, you should watch an interview in English with a famous person. Maybe Kiana Reeves. If you haven't done it, do it.

>> Well, Maria's going to be very disappointed. >> No. Yeah, I'm going to be, you know, crying and I'm going to be upset and sad. So, please don't disappoint me. Right. Well, you can, but you know, >> but I'm not going to be very happy about it.

>> Interviews. What kinds of people are frequently interviewed? >> I suppose the ones who have something important or relevant to a current issue or to say about a current issue and then the sufficient social clout really. It could be anyone from key politicians to celebrities to just random people who contributed something significant. You

used to get lots of interviews with like the man on the street but that seems less common these days. Could you give an example? >> Yeah, like the foreign secretary announced a change in policy the other day and so he was invited to comment on that and various spokespeople had to comment on that too. So those would be the people that get interviewed because they're relevant to the issue.

>> What kinds of things do famous people often say in an interview? >> Well, probably nothing that isn't extensively curated or stage managed to be honest. If it's an actor, for example, they well, they'll likely have been coached to talk about their latest movie or draw attention to it. Even politicians have some talking points they need to deliver for the interviewer. There's not much in the way of impromptu information that gets shared these days, at least in interviews.

>> Has this always been true? >> To a greater or lesser extent, yes. Because the purpose of an interview is not just to inform people, but it's also to inform people about a particular viewpoint. So there will be some kind of agenda there.

What should people wear to a job interview? >> Well, surely that depends on the job, doesn't it? If you're going to work in an office or some other professional setting, then you need to dress the part and wear a suit or some kind of professional attire. And if it's to work in something like a coffee shop, then presumably reasonably smart clothes will be fine. They might even prefer casual clothes since they're less obstructive.

>> Do you think this can change? >> No, I think people will largely be wearing things that are suitable for the kind of work they're in. I can't think of a reason why that would change. >> Why do we need to attend interviews when we apply for a job?

>> Well, a CV only tells half the story, doesn't it? In order to get the proper measure of a person, you need to meet them well in person, for lack of a better term. Then you can make a more accurate assessment of their character and their ability. If you just relied on what's on paper, then that could lead you to the wrong conclusions about people.

>> What should people do to prepare for a job interview? >> Well, you need to show that you know the job and the company. So reading up on the specifics of both is good and trying to anticipate potential questions, how you might answer based on your experience or understanding of different situations that can create a good impression and make you more likely to get hired.

>> And what can people do to get a job interview? >> Well, beyond applying for the job itself, I'm not really sure. Sometimes knowing people in the company can be a good way to get your foot in the door, but other than that, I don't really have a clue.

>> So, people are interviewed. Passive voice. >> Yes. >> Who is usually interviewed? And here we have frequently in the question often. So who is often interviewed? Who is frequently interviewed? Politicians, people in politics, celebrities, famous people or the man on the street? Just a usual ordinary person on the street. So we get lots of interviews with the man

on the street. Actually it is common. It is common on Instagram. It is common I think on Tik Tok. They ask you all kind of like funny questions to random people on the street. >> How much of those are real interviews though?

>> Oh, that's true. Yeah. But then like what is an interview? >> When somebody asks you questions about things on a particular topic. >> According to the Cambridge online dictionary, an interview is a meeting in which someone asks you questions. So it could be a meeting for example a job interview. Dear listener, right? Also questions could be about a job interview. So have an interview with in

an interview in a television interview it might be a call when you call somebody and you ask them questions right >> yes but you'll be asking them about a specific topic >> what do people say in an interview dear listener in an interview and you can say if it's an actor for example they will talk about blah blah blah so the strategy is to use if if it's a

politician They usually talk about d >> they will tell lies, >> right? Yeah. If it's an actor, they talk about their latest movie kind of their recent film to draw attention to it. Or if it's a singer, they usually talk about their latest album, their hits, songs. Yeah. their like lifestyle

perhaps, their I don't know likes and dislikes, but usually like people talk about their life, their views on something, what they do, their family and all this stuff like, oh, my wife, my ex-wife, children, divorce, why you did that, you know, like all this, you know.

>> God, that's a bit depressing, isn't it? >> Dirty laundry. >> Airing your dirty laundry in public? Absolutely not. Where is the dignity? No, but sometimes interviews are like this. Why did you divorce? >> Maria's job interviews.

>> No, no, no. I wouldn't do that. I would ask a person about their favorite food like what do they do to stay healthy? What what's the meaning of life? Do they feel depressed?

What do they do to get themselves out of this depression? Something, you know, like this like meaningful. Yeah. >> But what about you being asked? >> Yeah. You can ask me questions about food and my life and how why I don't do anything. You know >> why you don't do anything.

>> Yeah, I can tell you stuff. So, dear listener, job interview questions, a formal interview, a job interview. People should wear formal clothes to a job interview. And again the strategy is if you're going to work in an office then you should dress the part. Dress the part like dress formally. Wear a

suit. Have a professional attire. Attire is clothes. Yeah. Professional formal attire. The word is formal clothes that you usually wear for particular formal clothes. Attire. Professional attire. So if you're going to work in an office, you should wear a suit. If you're going to work in a bar, you should wear a t-shirt. So, you see, like if if the

work is in a coffee shop, then you don't have to wear smart clothes, formal clothes, but like casual clothes, casual everyday clothes would be fine. And you should wear clothes which are less obstructive, dear listener.

>> That means they don't get in the way. >> Yeah, obstructive. You know when you wear some clothes and they are all tight and it uncomfortable. You can't move. So obstructive stops you from moving causing problems. Obstructive clothes.

You attend interviews when you apply for jobs. So apply for a job. Attend interviews. Attend like visit interviews. Go to job interviews. A CV is not enough like your resume is not enough. So, in order to get the job, you should go to a job interview. Could be online, offline.

>> Here's how people look on paper and how they look in reality. So, the job interview will help with this. >> And the company, your future employer can make a more accurate assessment of your character. Accurate. Correct. Make assessment like like judge you, see who you really are.

Assess you. make an assessment like an examiner will give scores for your writing, for your speaking. So they assess you in the same way. Unfortunately, they assess you during a job interview. >> Why unfortunately? They need to get the best person for the job. >> Yeah.
