My debut album, Starlight, comes out on October 23rd, and since much of the album honors my dad who passed away when I was a baby, I wanted to tell you about it in one of the places I like to visit to feel closer to him. Starlight is named after the second to last track on the album. When my dad was alive, he was obsessed with astronomy and the stars, and he would go out in the middle of the night in the middle of winter in a bathrobe and slippers to look through his telescope because it was, quote unquote, peak viewing hours. After he passed, I remember looking through his telescope
as a little girl and feeling like maybe if I looked hard enough or could see far enough that I could see him up there in the heavens somewhere, and I'd feel a little closer to him. Eventually, somebody in my family gave the telescope away. They had no idea that I wanted it, and I didn't say anything because I felt kind of embarrassed about it. But even so, I felt like I lost a piece of my dad.
In the chorus of Starlight, I sing the lyrics, "I miss my starlight," and that's because my dad is my starlight and my guiding light in so much of my life. A couple days before my dad died during surgery, he recorded a VHS tape for my sister and I of him reading us a bedtime story. And now that story is what plays over the outro of Starlight. All the harmonies in this section reflect what's happening in the story, and it's probably one of my favorite pieces of art I've ever created. In this way, I love that I get to share my dad with all of you. I think that no matter what somebody's relationship is like
with their dad, whether they're not here on Earth anymore or whether they just don't have a good relationship with them, everybody deserves to hear a loving father read them a bedtime story, and I love that I get to give that to everyone. Starlight, the album, feels like such a beautiful reflection of what shaped me into the woman I've become, and I hope it helps you find the freedom to feel as deeply as you need to. You can pre-save Starlight now with the link in my bio. I'm so excited for you to hear it.
