  • Paul Ulibarri shares a putting speed control tip called pro speed to help improve putting for tournament play and casual rounds.
  • A faster putt causes the basket to shrink because excess velocity pushes the chains out and makes it easier to miss.
  • Practicing missing to the right side of the basket chain high helps control putting speed so the chains can better grab the disc.

What is up everybody and welcome back to another episode of Down the Fairway.

In today's episode of Down the Fairway, I'm going to give you a really good tip to help with your putting speed control. Now this is a term I like to use when I'm doing clinics or personal lessons and I call it a pro speed and I'm going to give you the reasons why having a pro speed will not only help you but it'll improve your putting for tournament play, casual rounds, just putting in general. Now having a good putting speed or a pro

putting speed is important because it actually makes the target bigger. The faster your putt the smaller the target will shrink. I'll give you this for an example. When you have a really fast putt and you don't catch the pole, what tends to happen is the basket actually shrinks to where when you hit the side you have so much velocity that it pushes the chains out and a lot of

times you'll miss barely and that'll flop out the backside. Now what I'm going to teach you today is a drill that'll actually help you get that speed under control. Now this is going to seem a bit silly but what I want you to do is I want you to go to the basket and I want you to start practicing missing to the right side of the basket. Chain high and make sure that when you miss your

putter actually lands inside 15 feet past the basket. Now what this will actually do is it'll give you a speed that actually will catch more putts. Not only you're going to make the basket and the chains able to catch your putt better but a lot of times you'll hit the chains and they'll fall in a bit softer making the target a bit bigger. It'll look a little bit more like this. I'm going to give you an example of the speed that I want it to be and then an

example of how it will catch better with that speed. As you can see once I got the speed right I hit in the same spot as the one that actually had a lot of momentum and pushed out of the basket but because the speed was good the chains were able to grab it and then it was able to fall into the basket

which made the basket actually bigger. I want you guys to start practicing this from all distances. That means from 40 foot, 50 foot, 60 foot to where your disc

is actually landing just past the basket not going very far past. Of course the obvious is you're not going to be getting as many three putts because

you're not blowing past the basket. That's a given but what other people don't explain is it actually makes the target bigger which means you're going to make more putts and be more consistent once you get down the fairway and you're able to cash in those putts. Now sure there's going to be instances where you need to have a higher velocity of putt. Windy situations, low ceilings and different things like that so definitely practice moving your

velocity higher and lower but for the most part when you're in a wide open situation 30 foot and in 60 foot and in practice having that really good speed because why not make the basket as big as possible. It gives you the best chance to make all of those putts. Thank you for watching this episode of Down the Fairway.
